Tom Balding Bits & Spurs
Back in ’84, Tom Balding was a northern Wyoming ranch hand, a refugee from the fast life in southern California. The future wasn’t too clear—until a woman brought him a bit that needed fixing. In his previous life, Balding had been an expert welder, so he quickly repaired the item. And a new career was born.
Nowadays, the Tom Balding name is associated with high quality, custom-made bits (and spurs). Customers include some top thoroughbred racing trainers, rodeo stars (like the legendary Larry Mahan), and lots of average, every-day trail riders.
Balding also works directly with customers—either by phone, email or in person at his Sheridan, Wyoming shop—to craft each bit to meet the individual needs. Folks can actually try out the equipment before purchase. Their feedback, Balding says, helps him improve his products.
So what makes a good bit? “Attention to detail. Non-pinching joints. Strength. Durability. Balance. And comfort for the animal—most importantly, comfort for the animal,” says Balding.
Mouthpieces are made of copper inlaid sweet iron, which allows for greater acceptance and increased salivation. And the shanks are offered in a variety of finishes—including sterling silver and gold.
Tom Balding says it’s been a long, strange trip from fixing that bit back in ‘84. Plenty of folks are glad he made it. Related posts:
