The Big RigBig Rig - Sterling Coach
The Sterling 53’ and Peterbilt Hauler
The scale of horse trailers and haulers continues to reach for excellence and setting the pace is Sterling Coaches. On display at the NFR Cowboy Marketplace at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas was none other than a work of art.
The sleek, yet rugged lines of the triple axle 53 foot Sterling Coach are designed from the ground up. Drawn and blueprinted in-house, everything from weight and balance calculations as well as customer needs and wants are considered. Sterling rigs are truly custom coaches and customers are invited to the factory to see their coaches being made. These trailers are built on air-ride suspension with triple ten thousand pound axles.
Equipped with hydraulic brakes, the rear axle can be hydraulically raised when making very tight maneuvers. For the horses there is no bigger stall compartment. These four stalls are wider, bigger and taller than any trailer in the industry. And the fixtures are heavy duty. This Sterling 53 comes with an 8000 Onan diesel generator mounted in the huge roof hay storage compartment and comes with 60-gallon fuel capacity.
The Sterling holds 100 gallons of fresh water and has one black and two gray water waste tanks. Another interesting feature on the Sterling Coach is its raised living quarter floor. Nothing hangs down under the profile of a Sterling, in fact the Sterling Coach adds at least 12 inches of head room in both the coach and sleeping berth due to its dropped nose height.
The interior is nothing less than luxurious. With a memory foam Cal-king-sized bed, microprocessor controlled lighting and a bathroom fit for a luxury apartment with its large walk in shower and porcelain toilet, the Sterling Coach holds nothing back. Flat screen TVs adorn both the living and sleeping quarters. Both are equipped with built in satellite and that goes for the radio as well.
Some of the other creature comforts and interior design include dual zone air conditioning and heating, Sile Stone counter tops, extra large Worm Wood Maple cabinets, hammered copper sinks, Ostrich skin walls, leather couch and settee, old fashioned tin ceiling, floor lighting and hand carved barbed wire detail on the valance, and the list goes on. This coach also has massive storage space and cabinets that seem to be conspicuously placed everywhere.
Attention to detail in a ruggedly designed luxury liner are the key words here. When asked why they call this trailer a “coach” their response was simple. They wanted to achieve the excellence of the renowned Prevost line of coaches and from what was presented at NFR in Vegas, it is just what they achieved.
A horse going coach of this caliber cannot be pulled by just any hauler and that is why Sterling hooked up with legendary truck builder Dennis Schwalbe.
For the Sterling, Schwalbe took the rugged infrastructure of the stout Peterbilt and added every creature comfort one can think of to bring a truly durable and rugged multipurpose hauler into the realm of out and out luxury. They know how to do it — they’ve been at it for more than 25 years.
This particular hauler had it all, custom built from the front door back the exterior features custom flairs and fenders, utility boxes and of course the bed with its heavy duty hauling outfit. The interior features custom glove leather captain seats inlaid with Ostrich, facing a walnut dash equipped with a Garmin GPS. In the rear are four captain chairs that fold into beds with drop down DVD monitors. Under the hood the Peterbilt sports a 530 horsepower diesel with a 13-speed Ultrashift transmission.
A quiet exhaust and factory rear end round out this beast machine that offers the best of all worlds…heavy duty hauling power with the luxury of a jetliner. For horse travelers with the wherewithal, it doesn’t get any better. Related posts:
