A Step Up in the Saddle
Nettles Stirrups, the brain child of National Cutting Horse Association Hall of Fame cutting horse trainer Ronnie Nettles is one of the few pieces of tack on the market today that was designed by a cowboy from his years of experience in the saddle.
The seed for Nettles Stirrups was born in December 1986 when Nettles’ wife Gala wanted an heirloom rocking horse built for Christmas. A wood working shop was the cowboy’s way of relaxing so for many a night he worked on the rocking horse, even constructing a pair of oak laminated oxbows for the saddle.
The stirrups sparked an idea to build himself a pair. Long hours in the saddle pressured stirrups against his shins, keeping them sore. Believing a stirrups should be more than just a place to set your foot, he had been searching for a better product, one that would alleviate foot fatigue and pain, one that would help the rider sit balanced in the saddle. Before long Nettles Stirrups was born.
Made from six pieces of wood that won’t stress and crack in its bend nor warp with time, Nettles Stirrups are the original laminated product. Using the highest quality oak available, the wood passes through two grading processes before it qualifies to become a part of Nettles Stirrups.
While the superiority starts with grading wood, it continues through the entire 39 step building process.
This process of using six pieces of wood increases the strength and safety of the stirrup and the six pieces also act like a cushion, absorbing some of the pounding usually felt by the knees. A unique stirrup bottom structure, unparalleled in any other product, helps to set the riders foot and aid with balance in the saddle.
Rather than use leather bellies for stirrup treads, the normal leather used by most stirrups, Nettles Stirrups uses a better grade leather to enhance a longer life of the treads. The treads on the Nettles Premier Stirrups are laced with eight neatly aligned lacings instead of the normal five found on other stirrups. In addition, the treads are skived on the sides for a neater closer fit. An innovative lacing machine was designed by Nettles to insure that the treads hold snugly in place.
Nettles Stirrups have double steel rollers in the throat for extra strength instead of the plastic roller as used on other stirrups. Even with the use of the double steel, the Nettles Stirrups rollers still have a smaller throat diameter, which helps to eliminate shin pressure. To add to its classic look, Nettles Stirrups are accented with brass nuts and washers.
It takes the feel of riding, the knowledge amassed from 35 years of experience to design a product that not only is comfortable but also assists the rider in the saddle. Today, Nettle Stirrups has branched out into an array of designer stirrups using woods such as walnut, mesquite, bordark, wenge and purple heart to create unique products to fit the rider’s style. One thing is for sure: riders have the assurance of a product designed by firsthand knowledge of the equine industry when they see that Nettles Trademark. Look for it burned into the side.
