Smoke Wagon

Taylor’s & Company Pride & Joy

There are several companies out there who import the Uberti six-shooter in a variety of configurations. There are few companies however that take these fine Colt reproductions and turn them into something special. In the case of the Taylor’s & Company Smoke Wagon, this pistol is in a class of its own.

To begin with Taylor’s & Company knows guns. They have been importing and customizing their single actions since 1988 under the direction of Sue Hawkins and Tammy Loy. Since that time they have grown to become one of the largest and most respected purveyors of cowboy firearms in the industry. Taylor’s & Company stocks a quality line of historically correct firearms and accessories from the 1840s through 1892 including black powder and cartridge pistols and rifles used throughout mounted shooting and the cowboy action shooting sports. In addition, their reputation for customer service is outstanding.

For the mounted shooter, the Taylor’s Smoke Wagon .45 Deluxe model comes out of the box ready to shoot. No gunsmithing needed to make this gun competitive. Everything you need is already there. This is thanks to a thorough going over of the pistol right at the Taylor’s factory by master gunsmith Don Jones. The gun is completely taken apart and tuned internally. The fit and finish of this gun is premiere.

Technically, the Smoke Wagon is a second-generation, stagecoach style, single-action revolver. It boasts a low-profile hammer and wider-style sights that allow the user to acquire sights faster, without cocking the pistol. It also features a thin, richly detailed, checkered grip for comfort and improved aim. All of these features are available on both standard and deluxe edition models. The deluxe edition model also includes custom tuning; custom hammer and base pin springs; trigger-spring at three pounds; jig-cut, positive angles on all triggers and sears for crisp, reliable action; a coil-loaded hand; and wire bolt and trigger springs.

A Handsome Pistol

The Taylor’s Smoke Wagon is a handsome pistol and comes in 4 ¾ or 5 ½ inch barrels. The gun has a blue finish and is color-case hardened. Shooters and collectors will appreciate the look and function of the slim, textured grip that provides control and comfort for improved aim. The open rear sight groove and wide front sight blade, combined with a low-profile hammer, allows for aiming without cocking the pistol so you can acquire sights faster. The standard model retails for $450 however, it is well worth the additional $125 for the deluxe model that retails for $575.

Now here’s the special part. Starting in April of 2008, the Smoke Wagon can be ordered with a Taylor’s exclusive low-wide hammer spur. Similar to that of the Ruger Montado, the Taylor’s custom hammer will be interchangeable with the factory hammer. At this writing the price for the low hammer addition has not yet be established.

To sum it up, the Taylor’s Smoke Wagon is a perfect gun for mounted shooting. Being able to purchase a gun directly from the company that produces a top quality action job bringing you an out of the box shooter is the real value. Add to that a company who will back up their work with a full time customer service division makes this investment a wise one.
