Shooting Horse

Shooting Horse - Dragon

Dragon

Name: Schudys Moneymaker–or Dragon.

Owner: Gary Vickers, Level 5 shooter from Tennessee, has owned Dragon for about a year.  Before that, Level 6 Rock Clark had him for five years.  He acquired the horse from noted trainer/rider Jimmie Allen.

Particulars: Sixteen year old registered Quarter Horse Paint.

Wins: 2004 World Points Championship.  2006 National Championship. 2004 Easterns Champion.  2008 Easterns Men’s 5 Champion. The first Level 6 horse.  Numerous state, regional and local victories.

Partnership: “I knew it would work the first time I ever rode him,” says Gary.  “I was nervous as a cat, getting ready to run that stage on him.  But it was almost like driving a car.  He was smooth, made every turn and every move just right.

Rock Clark agrees: “The first time I was on him, at the first barrel turn, I fell in love with him.  He was the easiest horse, the most forgiving horse.  Anything you wanted him to do, he would do.  And when I slid him to a stop, I looked over at my wife and asked, ‘Do we have the money…?’”

What Makes Him Special:  Gary says, “He’s real even tempered.  He’s got a heart a big as he is; he’s almost all heart.  There’s no quit in him.  He’s big and strong.  I’ve never had the feeling that we were going to fall; he’s just solid as a rock.  And he’s one of the fastest horses out here.”

Workouts: “I never run him at home,” says Vickers.  “I work him in short circles, lopes, and we long trot a lot.  I just do what we need to keep him legged up and in shape—probably three or four times a week, an hour or two each time.”

Diet: Straight oats, horse minerals and bran. He gets some vitamins.

Future: Vickers:  “We’re hoping he’ll be good for another three or four years.  Whenever he starts hurting and having problems, well, we’ll just let him be a horse for the rest of his life.”  Part of his deal with Rock Clark—if Gary decides he doesn’t want Dragon anymore, the horse goes back to Clark.
