Silver Screen Legend XII a Tribute to Red Ryder

Legendary comic book Cowboy Red Ryder was a fictional American hero to millions of boys and girls for almost three decades. Created by Cowboy artist Fred Harman and partner Stephen Slesinger, Red Ryder first appeared in print in 1938, eventually appearing in more than 750 newspapers with more than 14 million readers.

It was inevitable that Red Ryder would make it to Hollywood, starting in 1940. Of the four actors who played the character, Wild Bill Elliott is perhaps the best known and undoubtedly the favorite Ryder of most fans. His reverse-draw fully carved double gun rig and matched pair of two-toned Colt Single Action .45 revolvers, along with his trademark statement “I’m a peaceable man,” were part of what made this Red Ryder so popular.

The Happy Trails Children’s Foundation, a California based home for abused children founded by Western legends Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, will honor Wild Bill Elliott as Red Ryder with the Silver Screen Legend XII. This is the 12th year the Foundation has used intricately designed guns and holsters to raise money for abused children.

The Silver Screen Legend package consists of two Colt .45 single action revolvers provided by Colt’s Manufacturing Company.  Custom engraving is by Rocktree Ranch, the carved stag grips are from Precision Pro Grips, and it all comes in a handcrafted presentation case by Beauty from Scratch.

Jim Lockwood of Legends in Leather crafted the hand-carved double holster rig in the reverse draw style of Wild Bill Elliott.  He also made the matching spur straps for a pair of Damascus steel spurs from Charles Sauer and engraved by Norvell C. Foster. Silversmith Michael Ekstrom produced sterling silver conchas and buckle sets on the spur straps; Ron Love made the prop cartridges.

The Happy Trails Children’s Foundation is the only known children’s charity that actively supports the shooting sports and is supported by generous contributions from shooters, collectors, organized shooting sports and the firearms industry.

Drawing tickets can be purchased for $10 each on the organization’s web site www.happytrails.org or by calling (760) 240-3330. The drawing will be held December 19, 2009 in Apple Valley, California.

AMC Saddles Up for Western Reality Series

AMC, the folks who brought you “Broken Trail” with Robert Duvall, is developing what it hopes will be its first primetime series, a Western-themed, documentary-style reality show from producer Brett Morgen.

Described as a multigenerational family drama, the tentatively titled “True West” will follow a group of modern Cowboys as they pursue a quickly vanishing trade.

Joel Stillerman, senior VP of original programming for AMC said the show would be unscripted. “We’re not looking to do a competition show or one that’s heavily formatted.”

“True West” is still in the early development stage and AMC is scouting prospective subjects and shooting locations.

Understanding Lameness
Western Horseman’s new book examines the equine affliction from diagnosis to prognosis

Western Horseman has released Understanding Lameness, Examining Equine Lameness from Diagnosis to Prognosis. Past president of the American Association of Equine Practitioners, Terry Swanson, DVM, of Littleton (Colo.) Equine Medical Center and professional equine journalist Heidi Nyland, consider common lameness issues in user-friendly language presented in an easy-to-follow format.

In the first chapter, Swanson sets the stage, describing an equine lameness examination, the degrees of lameness and the latest diagnostic tools. His final chapter considers owner participation in treating and managing equine lameness.

The remaining 16 chapters address everything from hoof abscesses, white-line disease and navicular syndrome to laminitis, ringbone and soft-tissue injuries. Swanson presents a typical scenario for how each problem might become obvious and tells what the owner might do to help alleviate or evaluate the situation. Veterinary diagnostic procedure and treatment options follow, and lameness severity is considered in the final prognosis.

Swanson draws on his clinic archives so you know what to expect when viewing radiographs, ultrasounds, MRIs and more, and son Roy Dean Swanson has created outstanding illustrations. Nyland’s and others’ photos relate what’s seen via diagnostics and illustrations to the actual horse.

Swanson’s common-sense approach in Understanding Lameness is a great asset in keeping your horse sound, as well as for coping with a lameness diagnosis.

Understanding Lameness is 8 ½ by 11 inches, 215 pages and can be purchased at westernhorseman.com.
