CMSA Worlds Come Back to Amarillo

Group offers new format aimed to please competitors.

Tammy Sronce and Charlie Little will defend their World Champion titles as they take on mounted shooting’s top competitors at the 2009 CMSA World Championship when it returns to Amarillo October 20-25.

Brady Carr, CMSA Executive Vice President, says several major improvements will make this “one of the best Worlds ever.” First, the limited RV spots will be sold directly through CMSA and can be reserved and paid for with entries. In addition, security will be heightened throughout the week.

“We worked with the management (of the Tri-State Fairgrounds) and we’re going to close all but one gate during the day,” Carr says. All contestants will receive gate cards for their vehicles; all others will be stopped as they come in.

Move-in begins on Monday morning at 9 am sharp, and continues Tuesday morning at 7 am. Carr says, “We changed the schedule to get people done early, to avoid as many late nights as we can, and to limit the number of times people have to run in the Cody building.” The main match begins on Tuesday, and the Showcase has been moved to Friday.

Participants will also be glad to learn that the Finals and award banquet will be held Saturday night. This will allow riders to get on the road on Sunday. According to Phil Spangenberger, CMSA Board Member and editor of the Rundown, the members themselves requested this change.

“We still have cowboy church for those that want to attend it,” Spangenberger says. Randy & Heidi Gunn and The GunnPoint Band will lead the church service.

“We’re going to give the new schedule a try,” Spangenberger says. “So many people have been talking about it, if it does work well, then probably a lot of shoots will be that way.”

Carr encourages all participants to enter, reserve RV spaces, and purchase their banquet tickets online through the CMSA website. For complete information, check the cowboymountedshooting.com website.

Traveler’s Firearms Guide Gets Update

The Traveler’s Guide to the Firearm Laws of the Fifty States is now updated for 2009. Written by attorney J. Scott Kappas, this handy guide summarizes laws regarding travel with the firearms in cars, motorcycles, buses, ships, airplanes, and motor homes-both within the particular states and throughout the country-and provides brief checklists and short articles on licensing, registration, so-called “assault weapons,” machine guns, concealed and open carry, and self-defense, among other topics.

It is easy to read and understand, is well organized and concise. There is even a bar scale above each state law entry that rates the level of firearm freedom for that particular state. If you can’t find facts on a firearm law in the guide, there are phone numbers for relevant agencies in the back you can call for information.
Explanations for most of these laws can be found on the Internet and in law books; however, this compact, up-to-date guide

is one of the most comprehensive and practical resources for understanding basic firearm travel laws on the state and federal levels, and it includes a wealth of information that simply can’t be found anywhere else in this convenient form. This book is a must-have for truck drivers, motor home enthusiasts, campers and other travelers—as well as mounted shooters.

Oklahoma City Hosts AQHA World Show

Oklahoma City opens it doors to the American Quarter Horse Association World Championship for the 34th year. The event begins November 6 at the Jim Norrick Arena on the Oklahoma State Fair Grounds and runs through November 21.

More than 2,000 horses will compete in Amateur and Open events including halter, roping, cutting, Western pleasure, jumping, team penning, and more.

The event pays back more than $2.5 million in money and prizes, with the top honor of “Superhorse” going to the horse who wins the most points in three different categories.

The 2008 Featherlite Superhorse award went to Roo Star, who beat out a field of more than 50 contenders. Roo Star, the World Champion heading horse, also received points in performance halter, heeling, and reining and working cow horse.

The Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce estimates that this event brings more than $30 million into the city’s economy each year.

“The World Show is the cornerstone of our equestrian schedule,” says Steve Collier, Vice President of Marquee Event Development for the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce. “The Quarter Horse people have been very good to shop in our stores and eat in our restaurants. The people of the city welcome them to town!”

Collier estimates that each horse comes with an entourage of 3.5 people, from trainers and participants to spectators. In answer to this and other large equine shows, the fairgrounds recently underwent a $55 million renovation.

“It’s a truly state-of-the-art facility,” Collier says.

All events are open to the public. Finals of performance classes begin with Amateur Speed Events on November 7. A complete working schedule (which is subject to change until the week of the show) can be found at AQHA.com.

Visitors to Oklahoma City can find out where to stay, things to do and places to eat by visiting www.okccvb.org.

Extreme Cowboy Worlds in Topeka

The equestrian world’s fast growing sport converges on the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka, Kansas November 13-15 as Craig Cameron’s Extreme Cowboy Association (EXCA) presents its 2009 World Championship.

The events will be hosted with live commentary by the organization’s founder, Craig Cameron and will take place in the Expocentre’s R.R. Domer Livestock Complex indoor arena, boasting seating for 1400, a large warm up arena and stalls for 245 horses.

300 Horse/Rider teams from across the country—including the game’s most talented—will be invited to compete for the title of Extreme Cowboy Association World Champion in each of the five divisions: Young Guns, Youth, Non-Pro, Pro and Ride Smart.

Each day of the competition, EXCA Founder and Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame member Craig Cameron will present educational and entertaining riding demonstrations in addition to his live commentary for the competition.

Extreme Cowboy events are designed to challenge both horse and rider to maneuver through a series of obstacles. Event scores are given for each obstacle on the course as well as for overall horsemanship and speed. Membership in the Extreme Cowboy Association is required and is open to riders of all ages and all breeds of horse and mule. Western-style clothing and tack is also a requirement.
