Kenda Lenseigne Makes History at CMSA Worlds

Ellensburg, Washington’s Kenda Lenseigne became the first woman in CMSA History to take the overall title at the 2009 CMSA World Championships at the Amarillo National Center.

The lady’s level six competitor who beat out a field of more than 300 competitors in the six-stage competition also took top honors in the Lady’s Wrangler Pro and Lady’s Colt Eliminator.

Lenseigne who also holds six mounted shooting world records also set precedent by setting the top overall times over the men’s categories in all three main competitions.

Coming in reserve and taking the top men’s title was level five competitor Don Day. Ladies level four Natalie Johnson took the lady’s reserve title and 2007 World Champ Matthew Sronce won the men’s reserve title.

In the men’s division of the Colt Eliminator, 2008 World Champ Charlie Little took the title with Stephen Wilson taking the top honors in the Men’s Wrangler Pro. Stephen Wilson also took the top spot in the Rifle category and Tammy Townsend won the Cavalry competition.

THUNDER EQUIGAMES: LENSEIGNE LOVES VEGAS, TOO!

Kenda Lenseigne also took honors at the World Series of Mounted Shooting, part of the Thunder Equigames in Las Vegas, December 3 & 4.

She defeated L5 Jessie Kuka in the finals of the Open Ladies division and took home $3,987.  Lenseigne’s fellow Washingtonian, M5 shooter Mark Zueger, was champion in the Open Mens class, beating M6 Gary Vickers and grabbing the check of $5,310.

Other winners and their take-home:

• Limited Mens: Cody Shryock ($5,090)

 • Limited Ladies: Rebecca Molle ($4,428)

 • Pro-Limited Mens: Billy Montgomery ($5,090)

 • Pro-Limited Ladies: Whitney Alderson ($4,648)

Checks were also awarded for the fast times in the first round, overall fast times, top senior times in the first round, and top team.  In all, payouts totaled a remarkable $87,000.

The World Series—in its second year, held at the stellar Southpoint Hotel/Casino Arena—drew 115 riders, each of whom paid a $1000 entrance fee.

The format was unique.  All riders in a division rode the first stage, with the top five getting buys into the next round.  The remaining riders rode a second time; the fastest three moved on as well.  Those top eight shot in round two, with the top four moving on.  Then the top two in each class rode in the Friday finals.

To a person, the shooters were very impressed with the World Series of Mounted Shooting.  Most plan to return for the 2010 edition of the competition.

CMSA Shines Bright at AQHA World Show

Part of the featured Saturday night competition program in the Jim Norrick Arena at the Oklahoma State Fair Complex, ten shooters vied for the bronze trophies in front of an audience of cheering spectators.

An historic milestone in the history of the CMSA, the exhibition marked the first time Cowboy Mounted Shooting was included in the 34-year history of the AQHA World show.

The one-to-three minute segments are produced in-house and feature Western Shooting Horse staff members in informative video briefs covering Shooting Horse news, new products and behind-the-scenes coverage of events and competitions.

“Western Shooting Horse is committed to bringing news and information about the shooting horse sports to our print and online audience,” says Western Shooting Horse publisher, Ken Amorosano. “With the heavy use of our online social community, its only natural that we bring content from the pages of the magazine onto the screen in a compelling and contemporary manner.”

Each “Fast Blast” features a customized opening lead-in that includes images of the various shooting horse sports and activities covered in the magazine. Fast Blasts will be broadcast on the Western Shooting Horse web site, Shooting Horse Network, the Western Shooting Horse YouTube portal and FaceBook fan page.

TQHA TEAMS WITH MOUNTED SHOOTERS

Texas Quarter Horse Association (TQHA) has teamed up with Gulf Coast Mounted Shooters to sponsor two year-end high point awards in 2010.  Prizes will be awarded to the top mounted shooting Quarter Horse in both adult and youth (wrangler) divisions, with expectations to expand to three divisions in 2011 with the addition of a senior high point award.  To be eligible you need to be a member of CMSA and TQHA and your points must be earned on a registered Quarter Horse.

Points will be tracked by Lisa Dippel of the Gulf Coast Mounted Shooters LoneStarQH@aol.com.

REGISTRY SHOOTS ACROSS U.S.

CowboyMountedShooters.com, a point tracking organization for Cowboy Mounted Shooting, is now registering teams for the 2010 season.  With teams comprised of horse and rider competing by breed, this is the first program to recognize overall results based on the horse and rider as a team.

Results are tracked on a calendar year basis and teams are awarded one point for each competitor they place over in the overall results of a sanctioned CMSA, SASS or MSA match.  By using a single point system for all matches, it levels the playing field for those who can’t travel as far to attend multiple point matches.  Current standings will be available on the Cowboy Mounted Shooters website and year end awards will be given to the high point teams based on breed Nationally and in each Region and/or State.  To register or for more information, visit CowboyMountedShooters.com.

Shooting Horse Sale At CMSA Worlds A Winner

Level 6 shooter and top trainer Jimmie Allen admits the idea came late—just a couple of months before CMSA World Championships in Amarillo.  But a little hard work and quick communications, along with support from the CMSA board, made the sale a reality.

Nineteen horses were put on the block.  Potential buyers took a look at the animals on Monday; the auction was held the next evening.  At the end of the night, the gavel fell on ten horses.  Total sales figures were unavailable, but the high bid animal brought about $8250.

It also made money for a good cause.  Allen donated a couple of horses to the auction, with the proceeds—more than $2400—going to the CMSA scholarship fund.

Allen expects even better results in the future.  CMSA has already okayed a horse sale at its national competition in Tunica, Mississippi, next April.  And there’s a strong possibility that the 2010 Worlds will also feature a sale.

The Scoop

Leather maker Kippy’s, usually known for clothing such celebrities as Madonna and ZZ Top, has entered the sport of mounted shooting. The leather company has designed two complete rigs for up-and-comer Darcey Norick. Founder and owner Bob Kipperman says “I want to build the best mounted shooting holsters,” and he looks forward to his next commission.

New clothier Cowboy Militia has entered into an agreement with Resistol for a new line of cowboy hats. The first hat created using a new patented system was debuted at the National Finals Rodeo by last year’s world champion PRCA heeler, Randon Adams. Owner Jason  Trosper says the hats will be on the market in early 2010.

A new pair of pink chinks for the Tough Enough to Wear Pink campaign has been designed by Shasta Leather. The  chinks, commissioned by Joan Blakesley of Growney Bros. Livestock, will be auctioned off with other items at the Red Bluff Roundup as a fundraiser for the campaign. Last year’s pair went for $27,000, and Shasta Leather owner Mike Domeyer says he hopes his design will bring as much as $50,000. “It’s a cause that’s near and dear to my heart,” Domeyer says.
